Five Pitt Divers Qualify For Tuesday's Finals

BUFFALO - Five of Pitt's six divers competed in the NCAA Zone A Championships finals at Buffalo's Alumni Arena Natatorium on the second day of the event on Tuesday, March 10.
The men had all three of their divers - sophomores Dominic Giordano and Tony Galante, and senior Harris Bergman - qualify for the 18-man final round while the women were represented by freshman Meme Sharp and sophomore Rachel Saunders in the 18-person finals.
Giordano, who previously qualified for the NCAA Championships in 1-meter on Monday, also will be eligible to compete on 3-meter at Nationals after placing fourth in the event with a 12-dive score of 717.20. Giordano posted the second highest score of 387.20 during the prelims.
Needed to finish in the top-12 on 3-meters to compete at that height at the NCAA Championships in two weeks, Galante came up just short, placing 16th with a total score of 617.10. He sat in 14th after the prelims (318.15) and was less than two points away from the coveted 12th spot and ultimately finished 24.35 points away from that position.
Battling back issues, Bergman made a surprise appearance in the finals, beating out 31 other divers for the last spot and sneaking in with a score of 287.40 - a mere 0.45 points in front of 19th place. Bergman maintained his positioning throughout the finals, recording a 12-dive score of 575.70.
On the women's side, Sharp earned herself another top-12 finish, this time in 1-meter, and will need to place in the top seven of platform diving on Wednesday if she hopes to compete at the NCAA Championships in Greensboro, N.C. next week. If she accomplishes the feat tomorrow, she will be able to participate in all three disciplines.
Sharp's score of 530.05 was good for 10th for the second straight day. She actually bettered her prelim placing, which was 11th.
Saunders stayed in 13th throughout the day with a prelim score of 250.10 and a finals score of 501.05.
