Pitt Tennis Defeats Duquesne and Eastern Michigan

PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh women's tennis team (2-4) won of pair contests over Duquesne and Eastern Michigan both by the scores of 5-2 on Saturday at the Alpha Fitness and Tennis Center.
The Dukes took an early 1-0 lead by winning two of three doubles matches. Despite Molly Wickman and Amber Washington improving to 5-0 in third doubles, Duquesne was victorious on courts one and two.
Wickman and Washington built an early 5-2 lead, but Duquesne's duo of Alexa Miller and Zuzanna Stelmaszak reeled off four straight games to take a 6-5 lead. However, Wickman and Washington regained momentum and won the final three games to win the match, 8-6.
However, Lolade Ogungbesan and Callie Frey were defeated Kylie Isaacs and Sarah Shashura in first doubles 8-5, and Audrey Ann Blakely and Katherine Castro were topped by the Dukes' Chandler Consonery and Megan Wasson 8-6 on court two to claim the doubles point.
It was the first time in three matches that Pitt has not won the doubles point.
Frey then pulled the Panthers back even with a dominating 6-0, 6-1 victory in fourth singles over Maddy Adams. Ogungbesan then gave Pitt a 2-1 lead with a straight set 6-3, 6-1 victory over Alexa Miller in second singles.
Washington provided the Panthers with a 3-1 lead as she defeated Spencer Caravaggio in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, in third singles.
The Dukes got a point back with a victory on court one, but Amanda Wickman sealed the victory for the Panthers with a three set victory on court five, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4.
With the match decided, Katherine Castro rallied to win the third set tie-break 10-6 on court six and ultimately the match, 6-7, 6-2, 1-0.
MATCH TWO: Pitt 5, Eastern Michigan 2
Like the morning match, the Panthers dropped the doubles point, but rallied to win five of six singles matches to win the contest 5-2.
Molly Wickman and Amber Washington continued their winning ways as they defeated Daphne Fiedrichs and Alejandra Barcelo 8-5 on court three, improving their record to 6-0. They were the only Panthers to record a doubles victory this evening.
In singles action, Callie Frey led the Panthers by finishing first on court four as she took down Daphne Friedrichs 6-1, 6-2. Soon after, Amanda Wickman recorded her twelfth victory in 2015 after defeating EMU's Maria Paula Ribero 6-4, 6-4 in fifth singles.
In third singles, Amber Washington defeated Andrea Martinovska 7-5, 6-4 in a hard fought battle which provided the Panthers with a 3-1 lead.
Katherine Castro won on court six 7-5, 6-1 which secured the victory for the Panthers by giving them a 4-1 lead.
On court two, Audrey Ann Blakely won her first set against Ani Gogvadze 6-2, but dropped the second set by the same score. In the tie-break, Blakely came out victorious 6-3.
The last court to finish was Lolade Ogungbesan who fell to Klara Supejova on court one. The two battled back and forth as Supejova won the first set 7-5 and Ogungbesan came back and won the second set 6-1. However, Ogungbesan was unable to capture tiebreaker 11-9 as her three match singles winning streak came to an end.
Pitt will return to action Sunday, Feb. 22 as they take on ACC foe Notre Dame. The match is set to begin at 11 a.m. at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center.
