PITTSBURGH - Pitt head tennis coach Alex Santos has announced the 2016 regular season slate will feature 16 different opponents on the Panthers home court at Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center.
"We are very excited to announce our spring schedule," Santos said. "Our good fall campaign isn't a guarantee of anything but it gave us a strong base of preparation and a solid indication of our depth. Every match will be exciting and we will have to bring our 'A' game in order to have a chance to succeed. We will kick off our spring with the Nishan Vartabedian Invitational, a tournament that we hope to continue to grow and make it an integral part of our competitive schedule. After that, we have an amazing combination of the ACC matches and some local and state rivalries."
The Panthers will have a home court advantage against 16 total teams in 2016 and will take their game on the road seven times. In conference play, Pitt will face six squads that finished in the ITA top-25 at the conclusion of the 2015 campaign.
In their season opener, the Panthers play host to three teams in the second annual Nishan Vartabedian Spring Invitational at Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center in Harmarville, Pa. Pitt's first serve will occur against Marshall (Jan. 15) followed by Miami (Ohio) (Jan. 16) and will conclude the invitational with Akron (Jan. 17).
The Panthers will continue its homestand as they welcome West Virginia (Jan. 23), Youngstown St. (Feb. 5) and Penn State (Feb. 6) - before traveling to South Bend, Ind., for a tilt against Notre Dame (Feb. 12) to open ACC competition.
Pitt will then return to Pittsburgh to face Louisville (Feb. 19) and Buffalo (Feb. 20), before heading to Blacksburg, Va., to take on Virginia Tech (Feb. 27).
The Panthers will continue conference action as they open a five-game homestand starting with North Carolina (March 6) who was ranked fourth by the ITA a year ago. Later that week, Pitt welcomes Morgan State and Duquesne for a doubleheader at Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center. The Panthers will conclude the homestand with Duke (March 18) and Miami (March 20).
Pitt will hit the road for the following three conference matches at Wake Forest (March 25), Georgia Tech (March 27) and Boston college (April 1).
The Panthers return to Pittsburgh to play its last three home games of the regular season with NC State (April 3), Syracuse (April) 8 and Clemson (April 10) before heading to Charlottlesville, Va., to take on the Cavaliers (April 15) who ranked ninth at the conclusion of the 2015 campaign. Pitt will wrap up the regular season at Florida State (April 17) before heading to Cary, N.C., for the ACC Championships.
