Ogungbesan and Washington Reach Quarterfinals of ITA Regionals

LYNCHBURG, Va. - After its second day of competition at the 2015 ITA Atlantic Regionals, the Pitt tennis team continued its strong play as junior Lolade Ogungbesan and senior Amber Washington are set to compete in the doubles quarterfinal round.

Ogungbesan/Washington are now the second Pitt doubles team to ever reach the quarterfinals of the ITA Regional tournament. Last year, Ogungbesan and now-junior Audrey Ann Blakely became the first duo to accomplish the feat.

"We end the second day of competition with a good feeling but at the same time, slightly disappointed because we were extremely close to having an amazing one," head coach Alex Santos said. "Callie [Frey] battled like a warrior and was on the verge of upsetting a high seeded player. She could have managed that third set in a better way, but I am sure she took an important lesson for the future. In doubles Amber [Washington] and Lolade [Ogungbesan] played their best tennis and showed great leadership. Every point was played with a purpose, a sense of urgency, and a ton of energy."

Sophomore Callie Frey made her way into the main draw round of 64, after taking down two opponents in the qualifying draw on Thursday. Frey fell in the opening round on Friday to Marshall's Derya Turhan, 6-1, 6-7(7), 6-1.

Ogungbesan started the day on a high note as she defeated Claire Minnoe of Saint Joseph's, 7-5, 6-4. The junior is set to face Natalia Vlasova of Old Dominion tomorrow at 11:15 a.m.

Ogungbesan carried her singles momentum to doubles action as she and Washington took down Butler/Nandakumar of Virginia Tech, 8-4, in the round of 32. The tandem displayed another strong performance in the round of 16 as they defeated Barshcheuskaya/Rasmussen of VCU, 8-4. The duo will compete in the quarterfinals on Saturday against Hovsepyan/Tour of Maryland at 4:30 p.m.
