PITTSBURGH - The Pitt tennis team enters its fourth round of competition this fall as the squad is set to participate in the 2015 ITA Atlantic Regional Championships hosted by Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., at the Hershey-Esbenshade Tennis Courts. The tournament will begin Thursday, Oct. 15, at 8:30 a.m. and will conclude Monday, Oct. 19.
"We are very excited to be participating in the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships," head coach Alex Santos said. "This is the last tournament of the fall that is outdoors. We would like to apply and combine everything we have been working on. The girls have been doing an amazing job competing at a very high level and are gaining confidence from it. In doubles, it will be very important to start strong and keep it simple because the margin for error is limited. In singles, we want to stay disciplined and repeat our patterns until we get the results we want. There is a lot of exciting tennis ahead of us."
The Panthers will be joined by 27 other universities from the Atlantic region, including the host team Liberty.
Competition kicks off with the round of 32 singles at 8:30 a.m. and round of 64 doubles at 1:30 p.m.
In singles, sophomore Callie Frey and senior Amber Washington will compete in the first round on Thursday, while juniors Audrey Ann Blakely and Lolade Ogungbesan will begin on Friday.
Pitt doubles will be highlighted by Ogungbesan/Washington on Friday. The duo starts competition with a bye and will face a tandem from Virginia Tech or Georgetown. Also competing in doubles is the freshmen duo of Carina Ma and Natsumi Okamoto, while Blakely and freshman Gabriela Rezende will compete together for the ninth time this fall.
This time last year, Blakely and Ogungbesan became the first Pitt doubles team to ever reach the quarterfinals of the ITA Regional Tournament. Although falling to VCU, the tandem finished the tournament 2-1.
