PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh women’s tennis team opened the Nishan Vartabedian Invitational by going 2-1 in doubles action against Youngstown State on Friday morning at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center.
The Panthers were defeated on court one, but won on courts two and three.
In first doubles, the Pitt duo of sophomores Lolade Ogungbesan and Amber Washington fell to YSU’s tandem of Marta Burak and Dominika Lackova in a tie-break, 7-6 (4).
On court two, senior Katherine Castro and sophomore Audrey Ann Blakely had little trouble with Annina Brendel and Nehel Sahni as they were victorious, 6-2. Court three was more of the same for the Panthers as senior Molly Wickman and freshman Callie Frey topped Victoria Ferry and Julianna Heino, 6-1.
“This tournament will help us to get better and we are excited to start our spring season,” head coach Alex Santos said. “This is what it is about. It is about the team environment; the team competition. We want to get started on the right foot. I think the most important thing is that we compete with great energy and compete together. We need to fight for every ball. That's our main goal for this tournament."
After this morning’s doubles with YSU, the Penguins played West Virginia in singles. Tomorrow, Pitt will play West Virginia in doubles at 9 a.m., followed by Pitt vs. Youngstown State singles at 10:30 a.m. The day will end with West Virginia playing Youngstown State in singles.
The Nishan Vartabedian Invitational will crown individual champions in singles and doubles, as no team scoring will be used. Each player will be assigned points per win and loss according to her position in singles and doubles. The players with the most points at the end of the weekend will be named the singles and doubles winners.
