CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Boston College’s Hayley Dowd scored two goals and added an assist in leading the Eagles to a 3-1 win over the Pitt women’s soccer team Friday evening at Harvard Soccer Stadium. Pitt drops to 4-6-0 overall and 0-2-0 in the ACC while Boston College improves to 8-3-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the ACC.
“We were great tonight,” Pitt head coach Greg Miller said of his Panthers who outshot BC 15-12. “We played well in the first half. In the second half, we gave up two silly goals. They were silly, avoidable mistakes. From then on, we were great. Really, just the last 17 minutes we were all over them. We unfortunately dug ourselves into a hole. I’m very proud of our effort, the way the team fought and the way we kept the ball. We haven’t played like this in over three weeks. We showed a lot of resilience and character and really played some good soccer tonight. Finally, some things started to click. It was fun to be a part of it. It leaves you with an empty feeling. It came down to moments and we didn’t capitalize.”
Boston College took a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute when Dowd scored on a header off a Lauren Bernard corner kick. Dowd put BC up 2-0 in the 51st minute when she ran onto a ball played from Rosie DiMartino and finished with a shot in the net. The Eagles then took a 3-0 lead on a goal from Jana Jeffrey after she received a pass from Dowd.
Pitt’s goal came in the 54th minute after Roosa Arvas finished off an assist from Taylor Pryce. The goal marked Arvas’ team-leading sixth score of the season.
Pitt outshot Boston College 15-12, including a 10-3 margin in the second half. Pitt fired 10 shots on goal in the contest and forced BC goalkeeper Darien Dunham into making nine saves. In the game’s final 17 minutes, the Panthers took nine shots at the BC goal, including a shot off the post by Pryce in the 80th minute. Pitt goalkeeper Taylor Francis made five saves on the evening. Arvas led Pitt with five shots, followed by two shots apiece from Emma Pozzulo, Hanna Hannesdottir and Emily Pietrangelo.
“We needed to get some confidence back,” Miller said. “We were ready tonight. We had some things happen tonight that youth and experience would cover. If we had a little more of that, we’d be sharper and not give up silly goals. That’s a decent Boston College team and we were every bit as good as them. I’m very proud of their effort. I’m really proud of the group and hope we continue what we started tonight on Sunday at Syracuse.”
“Hanna Hannesdottir had a very good game,” Miller said. “Jackie Poucel was a monster back there. Emily Pietrangelo, in the back, had a very solid game in her first career start. Taylor Pryce was resilient in putting a lot of pressure on their backs and kept the ball well tonight. Siobhan McDonough, who is a Boston native, had a big crowd there. She played a little bit more inspired tonight, a little different look to her. We had great production from a lot of people. It’s gut wrenching because we still lost the game.” Hopefully we can build on it. We need to be consistently putting up these fights, give ourselves a chance and be in one goal games.”
Pitt is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 28 when it plays at Syracuse. Kickoff is at noon.
