Wildcat Invitational Draws
EVANSTON, Ill. – Playing in its second tournament of the season, the University of Pittsburgh women’s tennis team will participate in the Wildcat Invitational this weekend hosted by Northwestern University.
Joining Pitt and Northwestern at the tournament will be DePaul, Eastern Michigan, FIU, Kentucky, Michigan State, Oklahoma, UIC and Western Michigan.
“We’re excited to play in such a prestigious and high level tournament this weekend at the Wildcat Invitational,” head coach Alex Santos said. “Every single time we step on the court our mindset needs to be that we are playing in a final. Over the last couple of days we have been working on key additions to the girls’ games and if they implement those aspects they can improve greatly.”
Amanda Wickman is on the brink of becoming the 15th player in program history to join the 100 wins club at Pitt. After picking up three victories last weekend at the Hurricane Invitational, Wickman needs just one win for 100 in her career. Wickman and her doubles teammate Amber Washington took third place in Miami.
Wickman will open singles play against Yuriko Ono of Western Michigan, while she and Washington begin doubles play against Nagode/Caluk of FIU.
Both Lolade Ogungbesan and Katherine Castro went 2-1 in Miami to lead the Panthers in singles. Ogungbesan will take on Jarret Fisher of DePaul in her opening round match and Castro will be paired against Jasmin Kling, also from DePaul. The duo will team up in doubles and open the tournament against Morin-Kougoucheff/Lewis of Kentucky.
”Tomorrow our success will depend on our ability to trust and execute our patterns relentlessly. If we understand this early in the season that we need all seven players competing at their highest level on a daily basis we will be able to keep elevating the bar.”
The Wildcat Invitational is scheduled to run from Friday morning through Sunday afternoon. Be sure to follow @PittTennis on Twitter for continuous updates throughout the weekend.
