MIAMI– For the second day in a row, rain has hindered play at the Hurricane Invitational.
With singles and doubles contests still to be played tomorrow, matches were dispersed throughout the day before action was ultimately called due to weather.
Before action was haulted, the Pitt duo of Amber Washington and Amanda Wickman claimed third place in the Green Bracket of doubles. The tandem came away with an 8-6 victory over Auburn’s Lewis/Dikosavljevic in the third place contest and finished the tournament 2-1 overall.
“Our seniors showed great character today. It is very rewarding to see the upperclassmen show a desire to give back to the program and inspire the younger kids,” head coach Alex Santos said.
“I was very impressed with how poised and objective Molly [Wickman] was on the tennis court. She definitely exploited her strengths and found a way to win against two very strong doubles teams from Miami and North Florida. We are also proud of Katherine [Castro] for playing and competing at one of the highest levels we've seen since the beginning of our coaching relationship with her. All the work Amanda [Wickman] has been putting in is starting to pay off and her game is becoming more complete. Callie [Frey] and Amber [Washington], our new additions, showed great potential and it is important that they keep adapting as fast as possible to our core values. If they keep learning great things await for them at Pitt.”
Molly Wickman also went 2-1 in doubles but was paired with Michelle Valdez of North Florida as the duo won the consolation of Green Bracket.
Action in Miami continues tomorrow in the final day of the Hurricane Invitational. Check back with www.pittsburghpanthers.com tomorrow for a complete recap of the weekend.
