Softball is Outlasted In Eight Innings Against DePaul

CHICAGO, Ill.—Senior Kelly Hmiel recorded her 12th RBI of the year, however, it wasn’t enough as the University of Pittsburgh softball team dropped an eight-inning, 2-1 decision to DePaul in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader at Cacciatore Stadium.
Trailing 1-0 in the seventh, Hmiel smacked a RBI single to right field that allowed senior Niki Cognigni to score the game-tying run. Cognigni led off the inning with a base hit to left field. She moved to second with a sacrifice bunt from freshman Maggie Sevilla before rounding the bases on Hmiel’s hit.
Pitt (22-18, 5-7 Big East) out-hit the Blue Demons, 9-7 in the contest. Hmiel tallied the first of the game when she singled up the middle in the first inning. She was 2-for-2 with a RBI in the contest.
The Panthers threatened to score in the third when Cognigni led off with a single to left field. She moved to third with sacrifice bunts from Sevilla and Hmiel. However, she was left stranded with a groundout on the next at-bat.
Later in the fourth, freshman Carissa Throckmorton and senior Yvette Bravo singled and stole a base to put runners in scoring position, but both were stranded. Bravo tallied her team-leading eighth double in the second.
DePaul (24-12, 6-1 Big East) scored a run in the bottom of the sixth off two hits. The Blue Demons posted their second run in the bottom of the eighth with a bases loaded single.
Freshman Savannah King (16-11) suffered the loss on the mound. She gave up two earned runs on seven hits. King collected seven strikeouts and walked just two.
