Women's Tennis Defeats Connecticut, 5-2

CINCINNATI, Ohio—Freshmen Amanda Wickman and Molly Wickman recorded their 10th doubles win of the season to lead the University of Pittsburgh women’s tennis team to a 5-2 victory over Connecticut in a neutral site match at Western Tennis and Fitness Club on Saturday.
"Today's match was highly competitive,” Pitt head coach George Dieffenbach said. “The contest lasted four hours and 35 minutes. The win was a team effort and improved our confidence.”
The Panthers (5-4, 2-2 Big East) swept the doubles matches to earn the doubles point for the sixth time this season. The sister duo of A. Wickman and M. Wickman tallied their third consecutive victory in No. 3 doubles with an 8-5 score. The pair improved to 10-2 on the year.
Sophomores Jocelyn Lu and Taylor Washington were the first to finish, posting an 8-3 decision over the Huskies’ (0-5, 0-3 Big East) No. 1 team of Jen Learmonth and Maxene Weinberg. Lu and Washington recorded their seventh win of the season.
In No. 2 doubles, junior Gabrielle Catanzariti and sophomore Kimmy Borza prevailed with a hard fought 8-6 pro set. Catanzariti and Borza improved to 8-3 on the year.
Later in singles action, Lu and M. Wickman earned straight-set victories in the No. 1 and No. 5 slots.
Washington and A. Wickman, however, needed three sets. Washington outlasted her Connecticut counterpart, 7-5, in the first set. She then slipped 1-6 in the second contest, but rebounded with a 6-4 win in the third set.
Similarly in No. 4 singles, A. Wickman posted a 7-5 victory to open the match. Next, A. Wickman’s opponent got the best of her in the second set, 6-0. In the final set, both seesawed between games, but it was A. Wickman who would end on top with a 7-6 (14) decision, clinching the win for the Panthers.
Pitt returns to action on Sunday, March 4, hosting Syracuse at Alpha Tennis and Fitness Club in Harmarville, Pa. at 10 a.m.
