PITTSBURGH—Sophomore Taylor Washington advanced to the quarterfinals as Pitt competed in the first day of action in the Women’s Eastern Collegiate Tournament held at Army in West Point, N.Y. Due to inclement weather in the area, the first round of singles action was played traditionally. However, the second round of action was scored as a pro set, first to eight.
Washington advanced to the quarterfinals with two victories in D singles this afternoon. First, Washington defeated Bianca Drabek (UMass) 6-1, 6-1 in the opening round. Later, she dropped just two games to Devlin Ammendola in an 8-2 win. Washington faces top-seeded Kathleen Uy next.
In the top flight of singles, sophomore Jocelyn Lu advanced to the Round of 16 with a pair of 6-2 sets over Julie Labarthe (Quinnipiac). Later, Lu was outlasted in an 8-5 pro set against third-seeded Amy Simidian (Fordham).
Similarly, junior Gabrielle Catanzariti dropped an 8-1 pro set to Rachel Cantor (Quinnipiac) in the B singles’ Round of 16. Catanzariti will play Bianca Derrick (Hofstra) in the consolation bracket.
Freshman Amanda Wickman fell 9-8(7) in the Round of 16 to Connecticut’s Marie Gargiulo. She, too, moves to the consolation pairings and will face Liz Piscitelli (Lehigh) tomorrow.
In doubles action, sophomore Kimmy Borza and freshman Molly Wickman advanced to the quarterfinals with an 8-2 victory over Long Island’s Brittany Thompson and Nancy Zonneveld. Borza and Wickman will play Quinnipiac’s second-seeded doubles pair of Michelle Dassa and Jackie Raynor.
Seeded as the No. 2 pairing, senior Minh Evans and junior Karma Parbhu learned they will face Samantha Greco and Kathleen Wojciak of Rhode Island in the quarterfinals of B doubles.
Action resumes at 9 a.m. at the indoor Lichtenberg Tennis Center on Saturday.
