Baseball Falls to St. John's in Pitchers Dual

QUEENS, N.Y. - Pitt baseball fell to St. John's, 2-1 in the opening contest of a three-game series Friday night at Kaiser Stadium in Queens, N.Y.
Junior Matt Iannazzo (5-3) pitched a complete game, allowing just two hits and one earned run in the loss. The Norwalk, Conn. native struck out six without walking any batters in eight innings of work.
Iannazzo was matched by St. John's sophomore Kyle Hansen, who pitched eight innings and allowed just one run while striking out 11.
The Panthers (28-16, 12-7 BIG EAST) opened the scoring in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by senior Philip Konieczny. With runners at first and second and two outs, Konieczny hit a chopper that bounced over the third baseman's head and into right field, scoring junior Rick Devereaux.
St. John's (24-17, 11-7 BIG EAST) struck back in the bottom of the frame, tying the score at 1-1 on an RBI double to left-center. The Red Storm then took the lead on a Panthers error.
The Panthers out-hit the Red Storm, 6-2.
The teams will resume the series on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. Freshman Ethan Mildren is expected to take the hill for the Panthers.
