PITTSBURGH — Behind a dominant pitching performance and a historic offensive attack, the Pitt baseball team blanked No. 10 Virginia, 11-0, on Saturday afternoon at Charles L. Cost Field to clinch the series over the ranked Cavaliers. The 11 runs are the most Pitt has ever scored against Virginia in the 41-game series between the two programs.
AJ Nessler and Caden Dulin were the engines of an explosive Pitt offense that plated multiple runs in each of the first four innings.
Nessler finished 4-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored, including a two-run double in the third inning and a two-run single in the fourth. Dulin matched him blow-for-blow, going 2-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored. His biggest moment came in the third inning when he launched his 11th home run of the season, a 345-foot shot over the right field fence, to push the Pitt lead to 9-0. He also laced a two-run double in the second inning that opened the floodgates early.
Pitt jumped out quickly, plating two runs in the first inning on a Trey Fenderson sacrifice fly and a Joey Baran RBI single. The Panthers added three more in the second on Dulin's double and a Kai Wagner RBI double, and then erupted for four runs in the third, capped by Dulin's home run, to put the game out of reach at 9-0. Two more runs in the fourth on Nessler's single made it 11-0.
Wagner, Baran, Carter Dierdorf, Sebastian Pisacreta and Lorenzo Carrier each contributed hits, with the Panthers totaling 13 hits on the afternoon.
The Pitt pitching staff was equally impressive, combining to shut out the Cavaliers on just one hit across seven innings.
Chase Kriebel started and worked two innings, allowing one hit and striking out two while hitting one batter. Joey Ciancimino followed with a perfect inning of work in the third.
Freddy Beruvides Jr. then took over in the fourth and was untouchable the rest of the way, retiring all 12 batters he faced over four innings while striking out two to earn his first career Division I win (1-0). Virginia's only hit on the day came from Sam Harris in the second inning.
Virginia starter Kyle Johnson (0-2) was roughed up for seven runs on five hits in just two innings, walking five.
With the series victory, Pitt accomplished several program milestones. The 11 runs scored on Saturday are the most the Panthers have ever tallied against Virginia in the 41-game all-time series. Additionally, the 18 combined runs scored in the first two games of the series equals the best run total Pitt has produced in any three-game series against the Cavaliers in program history.
The series win over No. 10 Virginia is also Pitt's first ranked series victory since defeating No. 8 Florida State in 2024, and the Panthers are now winners of three consecutive games against ranked opponents for the first time since 2022, when they clinched a series over No. 20 Clemson before taking Game 1 against No. 5 Louisville the following weekend.
Pitt improves to 27-14 overall and 9-11 in ACC play. The Panthers will conclude the weekend series with No. 10 Virginia (29-15, 12-11 ACC) Sunday at 1 p.m.
