BATON ROUGE, La.–The University of Pittsburgh softball team dropped its first game of the LSU Purple and Gold Challenge, falling 4-0 to No. 12 Texas this morning. The Panthers slipped to 7-4 on the year, while the Longhorns improved to 15-2.
The game opened with two scoreless innings. However, Texas would score a single unearned run in both the third and fourth frames to lead 2-0. The Longhorns added two more runs in the seventh off four hits and a Pitt error.
Senior Cory Berliner (1-2) suffered her second loss of the season after giving up two earned run and 10 hits in 6.1 innings of work. Pitching in relief, senior Alyssa O’Connell forced both batters she faced to ground out.
At the plate, senior Reba Tutt led off with her second triple of the year in the first inning. That triple was the 10th of her career and ranks second overall in the all-time program records for that category. Tutt is now five triples away from tying the career record of 15 set by Francesca DiMaria (2003-06).
Later in the game, senior Ashley Amistade extended her hitting streak to nine games with a single in the third.
The LSU Purple and Gold Challenge was delayed through the day due to inclement weather.
