BATON ROUGE, La.—Senior Ashley Amistade was named to the All-LSU Purple and Gold Challenge, as the University of Pittsburgh softball team earned a 3-1 victory over Hofstra in the squad’s final game of the tournament, held at Tiger Park. The Panthers improved to 8-5 on the year, while the Hofstra slipped to 6-7 overall.
Amistade finished the weekend with a team-high .444 batting average and a .500 on-base percentage in three games during the tournament. Amistade was also a perfect 3-for-3 in stolen bases.
Pitt jumped on the board first in today’s game, as senior Reba Tutt opened the game with a double that bounced down the left line. That play was Tutt’s fourth multi-base hit of the year. Tutt would then move to third after Amistade recorded a hit in her ninth consecutive game. A few batters later, junior Kelly Hmiel recorded a RBI as Tutt scored on her bunt.
Hofstra tied the game in the bottom of the third when the lead off tripled and the second batter hit a sacrifice fly that Amistade caught.
However, Pitt regained the lead in the fifth when sophomore Holly Stevens recorded her 15th RBI of the year with a single that fell into left field. Stevens tallied the fourth hit of the inning and allowed senior Ashlyn Zellefrow, who was pinch running for junior Yvette Bravo, to score.
Tutt would then score her second run of the game on a sacrifice fly ball from Hmiel. Tutt also recorded a team-high five putouts in the contest and leads the team with 13 runs scored.
Freshman Karlyn Jones (5-1) earned the win for the Panthers on the mound. She allowed just one run off six hits in the contest. Jones also struck out two batters in seven innings of work. She boasts a 1.78 ERA in 39.1 innings.
Next, the Panthers travel to Johnson City, Tenn. for the Eastern Tennessee State Tournament. Pitt faces South Carolina State at 9:30 a.m. on March 11.
