MIAMI, Fla.--Two Panthers score on a seventh-inning error, as the University of Pittsburgh softball team upset No. 17 Georgia Tech, 2-1, in the Blue & Gold Felsberg Memorial Tournament at the FIU Softball Complex. The Panthers improved to 3-0 with the win, while Georgia Tech falls to 7-2 on the season.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Pitt had runners on second and third. Sophomore Holly Stevens was 0-3 as she stepped to the plate with one out on the board. Stevens was hopeful of her first hit of the game, but instead Georgia Tech's shortstop muffed the ball, allowing Stevens to reach base. Both junior Kristen Cheesebrew and sophomore Krista Rodgers scored on the play to give Pitt the victory.
In a similar fashion, Pitt defeated Providence (2-1) yesterday after the Friars committed a fatal seventh inning error.
This is the first time the Panthers have upset a ranked opponent since 2008, when Pitt posted a 7-3 victory over then-No. 23 DePaul. The Yellow Jackets are also the second-highest ranked opponent Pitt has defeated, as it handed then-No. 16 Virginia Tech a loss in 2008.
Seniors Reba Tutt and Ashley Amistade stole a base in the game, while sophomore Niki Cognigni was 2-for-3 at the plate. Junior Yvette Bravo and freshman Karlyn Jones recorded the other two hits for the Panthers.
Jones tossed 1.2 innings of relief and earned her second victory of the season. She retired all five batters faced, including three by strikes.
Senior Cory Berliner earned the start in the circle and gave up eight hits and one walk in her 5.1 innings of action.
Georgia Tech scored a run in the third inning, after Kate Kuzma scored on a sacrifice bunt.
Each teams stranded eight runners on base.
The Panthers face Illinois this afternoon. The Illini have received votes in the lastest coaches poll.
