MIAMI, Fla.—Senior Reba Tutt scored three runs on the day, as the University of Pittsburgh softball team earned its first shutout victory of the season with a 4-0 decision over Florida International today. The Panthers finished their season-opening weekend 4-1 in Blue & Gold Felsberg Memorial Tournament at the FIU Softball Complex.
After the first weekend of action, Tutt leads the team with a .375 batting average, .722 on-base percentage and five runs.
Notching a run in three innings, Tutt scored the game winner after taking a lead-off walk in the third inning. Once on base, she rounded the bases on the next at-bat when senior Ashley Amistade was awarded a base with one of FIU’s four errors in the contest. Amistade advanced to third on the play.
Later in the fifth, Tutt recorded another run shortly after reaching base when she was struck by a pitch from Florida International’s Jen Griadek. Tutt would then steal two bases and head home when the Golden Panthers’ catcher tried to pick her off at third.
Tutt boasts a team-best 4-4 in stolen bases this year. In her career, Tutt has swiped 55 bases which ranks third overall in all-time stolen bases. Second place belongs to Morgan Howard (2004-07) with 59 career stolen bases.
Pitt finished the game with two more runs in the seventh off a single from sophomore catcher Holly Stevens. Tutt and junior Kristen Cheesebrew scored on the play.
Tutt was 2-for-2 with three runs on the day, while Stevens had six putouts and two RBI in the game.
Freshman Karlyn Jones (3-0) earned her third win of the year, tossing her first career complete game. She gave up four hits and struck out six others from the circle. She ended the game retiring nine of the last 10 batters faced, including two called strikeouts in the fifth.
The Panthers will travel to Boca Raton, Fla. for the Florida Atlantic Tournament next weekend. Pitt opens the weekend with a 9 a.m. contest against Maryland on Friday, Feb. 25.
