MIAMI, Fla.—Freshman Karlyn Jones recorded her first win as a Panther, as Pitt’s softball team earned a 3-2 victory over host Florida International in its second game of the Blue and Gold Felsberg Memorial Tournament, at the FIU Softball Complex. The Panthers improved to 2-0 on the year, while the Golden Panthers slipped to 3-4.
Jones entered the game in the sixth inning with runners on the corners and one out on the board. Jones would strike out the first batter she faced and got the second to fly out to left field. Total, she gave up just one hit and struck out three others in 1.2 innings.
On the offensive end, the Panthers ended the game with two runs in the seventh inning. Senior Ashley Amistade earned a RBI when she bounced a single through the middle that allowed junior Kristen Cheesebrew to score. Senior Reba Tutt would then tally the winning run when she tagged on a sacrifice fly to centerfield from sophomore Holly Stevens.
Cheesebrew and Tutt recorded a stolen base in the inning.
Earlier, Pitt got on the board in the bottom of the sixth as junior Ciera Damon smacked a shot into centerfield, which scored Stevens. Stevens led off the frame with a double to left field.
Similar to how things went in the first game of the day for Pitt, Florida International struck first with two runs in the fourth inning, off two doubles.
Senior pitcher Cory Berliner earned the start in the game. She allowed two runs off four hits, while fanning four batters in 5.1 innings.
The Panthers resume play in the tournament on Saturday with a noon contest against No. 17 Georgia Tech.
