Panthers Fall At Kent State In Midweek Matchup

PITTSBURGH - The Panther baseball team dropped a midweek game, 19-6, at Kent State Wednesday afternoon to fall to 20-7 on the season.
Junior left fielder John Schultz (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson West Lawn) led the Panthers, going 2-for-3 on the day with two runs scored and three runs batted in.
Pitt scored its first run of the game in the top of the first on a Travis Whitmore RBI single up the middle to score Schultz. With three hits in the inning, Pitt took the 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first, Kent State exploded for five runs off just two hits. The first run was brought in by a walk with bases loaded. The next batter for the Golden Flashes hit a grand slam to bring the score to 5-1.
Kent State continued its momentum into the second inning as they knocked three balls out of the park in the inning, accounting for eight of their nine runs off the three homers. KSU recorded nine runs off seven hits and left one on base.
Pitt got its offense going in the top of the fourth with a five-run output. Zach Duggan (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) drove in the first run with a single up the middle, driving home Cory Brownsten. Schultz picked up his three RBI with a double down the left field line. Pitt's final run of the inning came off a David Chester sacrifice fly, which drove in Schultz, cutting the lead to 14-6.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Golden Flashes added to their lead, however, with five runs off of three hits. Two additional homers drove in the five runs for the 19-6 lead.
Scoring was quieted for both teams the remainder of the game as Kent State recorded just one hit in the remaining four innings as Pitt pitching retired 12 of the last 13 batters. The Panthers threatened in the seventh, but were held scoreless, leaving three on base.
Starter Kevin Dooley (Doylestown, Pa./Centrals Bucks East) suffered the loss for the Panthers, pitching 1.1 innings while giving up eight runs on three hits.
Pitt will host No. 7 Louisville for a three-game set over the weekend. Game times are set for 6 p.m. Friday, 3 p.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday at Trees Field.
