PITTSBURGH — The University of Pittsburgh tennis team bumped its series record to 28-2 with Carnegie Mellon University following a 6-3 win here at the CMU Campus Tennis Courts.
“As always, Carnegie Mellon is a well-coached, very competitive team,” said head coach George Dieffenbach. “Our matches are always tight with CMU and today was no exception.”
The two teams played in a nine-point format with each doubles and singles match counting for one point rather than the best two-of-three in doubles gets one point. The Panthers (8-4, 3-3 Big East) opened up by taking two of the three doubles matches played.
“Winning two out of three doubles matches was very important in the format our match was played in,” said Dieffenbach. “Credit goes to our No. 1 and No. 3 teams for closing out their respective matches.”
The No. 1 doubles team of Elizabeth Adams and Shannon Benic picked up their 10th doubles win of the season, downing the team of Chen/Herrick by an 8-6 margin. Adela Aprodu and Karma Parbhu snapped a three-match losing streak at No. 3 doubles with their 8-5 win over Tam/Chui.
Adams and Benic were both winners in singles action in straight sets. Adams defeated Laura Chen in No. 1 singles action, 6-4, 6-2 for her 12th singles win of the year while Benic was a 7-5, 6-1 winner over Alex Tapak at No. 3 singles. Adams, who climbed to 116 wins, moved into sixth place on the all-time wins list at Pitt.
Also picking up wins on the day were Gabi Catanzariti, 6-0, 6-1 over Jenn Chui at No. 4 singles and Karma Parbhu at No. 6 singles was a 6-1, 6-4 straight-set winner over Ashley Herrick.
“All singles matches today featured tough competition,” added Dieffenbach, who picked up his 298th career win today.
Pitt hits the road this coming weekend for matches with Marshall and Cincinnati. The Panthers and Thundering Herd are slated for a 10 a.m. matchup on Saturday, April 10 with Big East rival Cincinnati tentatively scheduled for Sunday, April 11th at 10 a.m. at Marshall.
