PITTSBURGH — The University of Pittsburgh’s women’s tennis team will enter this week’s Big East Championship Tournament as the No. 10 seed, meeting seventh-seeded Rutgers in first-round action at the Courtney Tennis Center in South Bend, Ind.
Pitt (10-7, 5-5 Big East) is coming off a milestone weekend, winning two of three matches over the span of three days. The Panthers kicked off the final weekend of regular-season action with a 7-0 win over Providence and followed it up with a 4-3 win over St. John’s. The win over the Red Storm gave head coach George Dieffenbach his 300th career win at the helm of the Pitt women’s program and 489th total win. Dieffenbach coached the Pitt men’s tennis team from 1975-97, accumulating a 189-157 record during that span.
The Panthers are 8-20 at the Big East Championship Tournament all-time and are coming off their best finish in program history last year – seventh. Last season’s championship also marked the first year Pitt had won its opening-round match, as the Panthers downed Cincinnati by a 4-3 margin.
The Panthers and Scarlet Knights met earlier this season in Piscataway, where Rutgers was a 7-0 winner. Match time is set for Thursday, April 22 at 9 a.m.
