Panthers Fall 5-2 to Connecticut in Regular-Season Finale

STORRS, Conn. — The University of Pittsburgh women’s tennis team closed out regular-season action with a 5-2 loss to Big East Conference rival Connecticut, wrapping up a three-day road trip in which Pitt went 2-1.
“Connecticut played well today,” said head coach George Dieffenbach. “They got off to a strong start in doubles to win the first point on the day.”
The Huskies swept all three doubles matches to earn the one point advantage prior to singles action. Pitt, playing in its third match in as many days, was coming off an emotional win on Saturday over St. John’s which gave Dieffenbach his 300th career win.
Elizabeth Adams and Sabrina Visram were the lone Panthers to record wins in singles play on the day. Adams was a 6-2, 7-5 winner over Kelley LoRusso at No. 1 singles while Visram battled through a three-set match at No. 5 singles, winning 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.
“Adams and Visram competed well to win their matches while Adela fought hard in losing at No. 2 singles in a super tiebreaker,” added Dieffenbach. “Our goal on this trip was to come away with two wins and we accomplished that. With the regular season over now, we will wait for selection and seeding for this week’s Big East Conference Tournament at Notre Dame.”
The field for the Big East Conference Tournament is expected to be announced tomorrow afternoon. The Panthers finished the regular season with a 10-7 overall mark and a 5-5 record in Big East action and will look to top last year’s program-best finish at the year-end tournament.
