Panthers Win Third Straight Match, Down Bonnies 6-1

OLEAN, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh women's tennis team picked up its third straight win of the 2010 spring season, dominating St. Bonaventure, 6-1, here today in Olean, N.Y.
The Panthers (3-1, 1-1 Big East) took two of the three doubles matches, carrying the one-point advantage into singles play with the Bonnies. Elizabeth Adams and Shannon Benic breezed through No. 1 doubles, winning 8-1 over team Pallijunnel/Barousse. Adela Aprodu and Karma Parbhu also won in convincing fashion over Archer/Garcia-Rojas, 8-1 in No. 3 doubles.
Pitt didn't let up in singles play, winning five of six matches on the day. Adams dropped a hard-fought match to Manuela Marin-Salcedo, 7-6 (1), 7-5 to move to 2-2 on the spring season. From there on however, the Panthers won each match in straight sets.
"Today was an excellent team effort and victory over a much-improved and competitive St. Bonaventure tennis team," said head coach George Dieffenbach.
Aprodu picked up her first win in singles action this spring, knocking off Maria Barousse, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Freshman Gabrielle Catanzariti remains undefeated this spring season, improving to 4-0 following her 6-3, 6-4 win over Kathryn Kvas at No. 3 singles.
Senior Sabrina Visram continues to find her old form, winning for the third time in four matches in singles action. Visram knocked off Amanda Pallikunnel 6-4, 6-4 while Parbhu was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 5 singles.
Competing for the first time this spring was sophomore Minh Evans. Evans followed suit, winning 6-0, 6-2 over Eileen Horgan at No. 6 singles.
"We will look to ride the momentum of our three-match winning streak as we travel to face an outstanding Big East opponent in Syracuse tomorrow," said Dieffenbach.
The Panthers will continue action on the road, heading to Syracuse University for a Big East Conference clash on Sunday, Feb. 28. Match time is set for 11 a.m.
