PITTSBURGH -
Sophomore Alicia Talucci has again won the all-around competition as the Pitt gymnastics team scored a 192.925, with the Panthers recording wins over George Washington and William & Mary, and a loss to Maryland.
Talucci (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) scored a 39.225 for her fifth all-around title this season. She helped lead the Panthers (5-6, 2-3 EAGL) to wins over EAGL opponent George Washington (186.650) and William & Mary (188.175) and a loss to host, and EAGL foe, Maryland (194.500).
Pitt’s strongest event of the night was again the vault as the Panthers scored a meet-best 49.075. Senior Dani Bryan (Germantown, Md./Northwest) led the way with a 9.925, which was nearly a full tenth of a point higher than the second place finisher. In the top 10, The Panthers placed their five scorers at first (Bryan), third (Talucci and Meaghan Biros – 9.825), sixth (Shannon Vafiadou – 9.800) and 10th (Jen Liberato – 9.700).
The Panthers again scored the highest team score on the uneven bars with a 48.350 on the afternoon. Talucci and Liberato (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) each finished third (9.725), while Jessica Byich (Nicktown, Pa./Bishop Carroll) took fifth (9.675), Bryan took seventh (9.625) and Sarah Thompson (Shokan, N.Y./Onteora) finished ninth (9.600).
On the balance beam, Talucci continues to improve and took the top spot on the day with a 9.850. Pitt’s 47.000 on the beam fell behind Maryland’s 48.525.
Pitt’s 48.850 on the floor exercise fell just behind Maryland’s 48.825, but it was enough to give the Terps the quad meet win. Talucci scored a 9.825, which was good enough for second overall. She was followed by Pitt’s Molly Moyer (Telford, Pa./Buxmont Christian) in sixth (9.725), Biros (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) in eighth (9.700) and Vafiadou (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) in 10th (9.650).
Pitt returns to action Saturday, Feb. 27 for a dual meet at N.C. State at 7 p.m. The meet will be another matchup between EAGL opponents.
