Panthers Claim 6-1 Win Over Bucknell

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — The University of Pittsburgh women’s tennis team bounced back from its season opening defeat to West Virginia by knocking off Bucknell University, 6-1, here today at the West Branch Tennis Club.
“We rebounded well from the tough 5-2 loss to West Virginia on Thursday,” said head coach George Dieffenbach. “[Elizabeth] Adams and [Shannon] Benic, as well as [Sabrina] Visram and [Gabi] Catanzariti played excellent tennis today, winning both their singles and doubles matches.”
The Panthers (1-1, 0-1 Big East) took the early 1-0 lead following doubles action as the No. 1 team of Adams and Benic carded a 9-8 (3) win over Tania Varela and Lauren Lucido while the No. 2 doubles team of Catanzariti and Visram picked up their second straight doubles win, downing Carlin Calcaterra and Dara Dwojewski 8-3.
Pitt took five of the six singles matches on the day, compared to just two the last time out. Adams and Catanzariti each ran their dual winning streak to two with wins on the afternoon. Adams, a 6-3, 6-4 winner in the No. 1 singles match against Varela was followed by Catanzariti’s 7-6 (4), 6-1 win at No. 4 singles over Dumitrita Iepuras.
Playing in the No. 3 singles slot, Benic was a winner in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2 over Dwojewski. Visram and Parbhu also picked up wins today playing in the No. 5 and No. 6 spots, respectively. Visram was a 6-3, 5-7, (10-3) winner over Calcaterra while Parbhu won 6-4, 6-4 over Lauren Rottkamp.
“[Karma] Parbhu had a good win at No. 6 singles today,” said Dieffenbach. “Today’s match was a strong team effort against a very good Bucknell team. We showed a good balance of offense and defense that allowed us to build momentum going into practice this week to prepare for Saturday’s Big East showdown with Georgetown University.”
The Panthers and Hoyas will meet on Saturday, Feb. 20 at The Club in Monroeville, Pa. Match time is set for Noon.
