PITTSBURGH—Pitt Head Women’s Tennis Coach George Dieffenbach announced the hiring of Kristy Borza as an assistant coach. Borza was a three-time MVP and captain of the squad in 2009.
A year after graduating, Borza returns to the Panthers as a first-year assistant coach. She currently holds the all-time school records for single-season singles wins (28), career singles wins (91), career doubles wins (85) and combined wins (176). She also ranks second in doubles wins in a season (23).
"It is an honor to be back at the University of Pittsburgh, especially coaching under George Dieffenbach,” Borza said. “I look forward to learning from his experience, knowledge of the game, and positive attitude. Women's tennis is a program at Pitt that continues to improve each year and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to coach this team to the next level."
Borza became the fastest player in Pitt history to record 100 career victories after competing in just 137 career matches. As a junior, she joined the 100-Victory Club on September 14, 2008 after she defeated Denise Liebschner of Seton Hall (6-1, 6-0) en route to her second Women's Eastern Collegiate Championship. Borza is also the first-ever Panther to achieve an ITA singles ranking and finished her junior year ranked No. 26 in the ITA.
Alongside then-doubles teammate Leah Friedman, Borza obtained Pitt’s first-ever ITA East region doubles ranking (No. 13) as a freshman. That was the lone ranking for any Big East school in that top-14 poll.
Off the court, Borza earned the 2008-09 Big East/Aeropostale Institutional Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. Additionally, as a three-time member of the Big East Academic All-Star Team and four-time Dean’s List honoree. She was named Pitt’s 2009 Blue-Gold Award recipient and has her name etched on the University of Pittsburgh Varsity Walk.
