Pitt Ties Marquette 2-2 In Double Overtime

INDIANOLA, Pa. - The Pitt men's soccer team tied conference opponent Marquette in a double overtime contest Saturday afternoon at Founders Field. Pitt is now 5-4-2 on the year, and 0-1-2 in Big East play. Marquette is 4-3-4 and 1-1-1 against conference opponents.
In the first half, the Panthers produced two goals off of three shots.
In the 15th minute, after a scuffle in front of the net, freshman Alex Grayson collected the loose ball from five yards out, and one-timed it into the upper left corner of the goal. The tally, which gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead, also marks Grayson's first career goal.
During the 23rd minute, Grayson set the Panthers up for their second goal of the game. Grayson's cross from the lower left corner of the field was headed into the goal, and past the Golden Eagles goalkeeper, by senior Sam Luffy for a 2-0 Panther advantage. Luffy now has three goals on the year. With the goal, he is now tied with Alex Betancourt for most goals scored (3) and points (7) this season.
While Pitt was outshot 5-3 and fell behind Marquette in corners (2-0), they entered the half with a 2-0 scoring advantage.
Ten minutes into the second half, the Golden Eagles collected their first goal when TeeJay East collected a through ball off Bryan Ciesiulka. East controlled possession of the ball and one-timed it into the lower left corner of the net, past goalkeeper Hami Kara, to cut the Panther lead in half 2-1.
In the 63rd minute of play, Pitt was forced to play down a player, giving Marquette a one-man advantage.
After playing with the man advantage for five minutes, Marquette tied the game 2-2. Ciesiulka tallied his third point of the day (1G-1A) after he collected a through pass from Calum Mallace and shot the ball into the left corner of the net.
With three minutes remaining in regulation, Terry Boland had a breakaway up the field to give the Panthers their best opportunity to break the tie, but was brought down by a Marquette defender.
In the 87th minute the game was back at even-strength, ten-on-ten, when the Golden Eagles were also forced to play down a player.
The Panthers outshot the Golden Eagles 4-1 in the first overtime period, but neither team was able to produce a winning goal.
Throughout the second overtime, both Pitt and Marquette produced several scoring opportunities, but neither team was able to find the back of the net.
The Panthers fell behind in both shots (11-14) and corners (8-4), but kept the Golden Eagles from collecting another goal.
Junior Ryan Brode led the Panthers with four shots on the day. He leads the team with 31 shots on the year.
Pitt will face Big East opponent and arch rival West Virginia when they travel to Morgantown, W.Va. on Wednesday, Oct. 13. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
