Evans, Adams Reach Finals in West Point

PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh women’s tennis team opened up the fall portion of its 2009-10 season at the 2009 West Point Eastern Tennis Invitational, hosted by Army in West Point, N.Y. this past weekend.
Junior Elizabeth Adams (Reading, Pa./Wilson West Lawn) and sophomore Minh Evans (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) both advanced to finals matches in the three-day event. Evans went 2-2 and captured the Faith Singles bracket, defeating Brett Davis (Bowodin) 8-5 in the finals while Adams also posted a 2-2 mark as the fifth seed in the main singles bracket. Following a first-round bye, Adams fell 2-6, 2-6 to Victoria Aiello (Middleburg) before winning two straight in the consolation bracket to advance to the Honors Singles finals. There, she squared off against fellow Big East foe Christina Tan (Syracuse) who would go on to win 8-0.
Also collecting wins at the invitational were senior Shannon Benic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) in the third singles bracket while junior Adela Aprodu (Hamilton, Ont.) in the second singles. Benic tallied a 2-2 record while Aprodu went 1-1.
In doubles action, the freshmen team of Karma Parbhu (Omaha, Neb./Millard North) and Gabrielle Cantanzariti (Pittsburgh, Pa./Swickley Academy) notched a 4-2 record for the weekend, finishing third in the Lichtenberg Doubles bracket. Two of their four wins came by way of shutout, including an 8-0 win over the Big East team of Alexandra Harvey and Slavina Kaplanska (Seton Hall).
The Panthers will continue fall action this coming weekend, Oct. 2-4, at the Sergio Tacchini Invitational held in Norfolk, Va.
