
Penn Defeats Women's Soccer 2-1 in Overtime

PHILADELPHIA —Penn's Marin McDermott broke a 1-1 tie in the game's 94th minute to give Penn a 2-1 overtime win over the Pitt women's soccer team Sunday at Rhodes Field. Pitt drops to 4-2-0 on the year, while Penn improved to 3-1-0.
Pitt grabbed a 1-0 lead in the game's 53rd minute on a goal from junior Christina Nicassio. From the near corner of the penalty box, Nicassio knocked the ball from the near corner past Penn goalkeeper Caroline Williams and into the far corner of the net. The goal was assisted by freshman Ashley Cuba and junior Liz Carroll. The score marked the first of Nicassio's career.
Penn spent the rest of the half scrambling to tie the game. The Quakers tied the game at 1-1 and sent the game into overtime in the 85th minute on a set piece. Theresa Yankovich floated a shot into the crowd in the penalty box. Kaitlin Campbell timed the offering and headed the ball past Pitt goalkeeper Morie Kephart.
McDermott's score came just three minutes into the overtime period. Dribbling, she maintained possession from near midfield to the endline where she sent a shot into the goal.
Pitt outshot Penn 17-16 in the contest. The Panthers held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Pitt's Kephart finished with seven saves.
At halftime the game was deadlocked at 0-0. Pitt outshot Penn 11-8 in the first half. The Panthers had numerous first half scoring opportunities including Klarissa Ames' shot that was headed for the goal's back corner.
Pitt opens Big East play against No. 12 West Virginia on Friday, Sept. 18. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Founders Field.
