Adams Named Team MVP

TAMPA, Fla.—On the eve of her birthday, sophomore Elizabeth Adams was selected as Pitt’s women’s tennis team MVP, following a 4-0 loss to USF on the third day of the Big East Championship, held at the USF Tennis Courts. The Panthers end their season at 12-10.
Recording its best-ever finish in the conference tournament, Pitt tied for seventh this afternoon. The Panthers began the championship with a 4-3 upset victory over eighth-seeded Cincinnati on Thursday, claiming their first-ever first round win. Next, Pitt faced top-seeded Notre Dame on Friday, before its match against No. 3 USF today.
Adams became the 22nd MVP in the program’s history. She posted a victory in singles and doubles against the Bearcats and ended her season with a team-leading 22 singles wins and 24 doubles victories. Boasting the single-season record for doubles (24), she finished eighth on the single-season singles list.
Adams now stands at 93 career wins, and is 12th overall on the all-time career doubles list and 16th overall in career singles.
Seniors Kristy Borza and Christie D’Achille finished their careers as members of the 100-Victory Club, and led the Panthers to three Big East Championship appearances. Borza holds school records in single-season singles (28), career singles (91), career doubles (85) and combined wins (176).
D’Achille finished the season with a 25 victories and improved to eighth on the combined wins list, tying Erin Shalbrack (1995-99) with 113 wins. She is also fourth overall on the single-season win percentage list and stands at eighth in all-time career singles and 10th in career doubles.
Sophomore Adela Aprodu and freshman Minh Evans posted 16 and 10 singles wins, respectively, while finishing with six doubles wins as the No. 2 doubles team. Additionally, junior Shannon Benic stepped up into the lineup to finish with 20 combined victories.
