PITTSBURGH –Seniors Kristy Borza, Christie D’Achille and Fran Liebenguth were honored prior to their final home match as members of the University of Pittsburgh women’s tennis. During that match, Pitt suffered its first conference loss of the season when it dropped a 6-1 decision to Syracuse, at the Oxford Athletic Club. The Panthers slipped to 10-4 on the season and 5-1 in league action, while Syracuse improved to 12-5 on the year.
Borza is a three time team MVP, who became the fastest player in history to record 100 victories at Pitt. A 2008-09 recipient of the Big East Aeropostale Institutional Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, she is also the first Panther ever to achieve an ITA singles ranking. Borza also garnered half of Pitt’s first-ever regional doubles ranking as a sophomore. Borza is the all-time combined wins (172), career singles (90) and career doubles (82) record holder.
D’Achille become the 12th member of the 100-victory club, this season, and boasts 109 combined career wins. Additionally, she is eighth on most career singles wins list (59) and entered the season with the sixth highest winning percentage in career singles (.700). Her sophomore season, she tied the single-season doubles record with 21 victories. Last year, D’Achille won the deciding match at the Big East Championships against West Virginia.
Liebenguth has been a member of the women’s tennis team the last two seasons. She earned her first win in the Army Invitational with a score of 8-2. Liebenguth also has two doubles wins, after garnering an 8-5 victory in the fall Maryland and Hampton Roads Invitationals.
The match began with Pitt earning the doubles point, yet again, as the Panthers have won the doubles point in all but one match this year. The No. 1 doubles team of Borza and sophomore Elizabeth Adams won their match 8-6, while the No.3 pair of D’Achille and junior Shannon Benic sealed the point with a convincing 8-2 victory. Borza and Adams are 20-2 on the year, while D’Achille and Benic are 7-0.
In singles, Borza forced a third set after dropping the first set (3-6), but fell 2-6 in the tiebreaker.
The Panthers open a five-match road series against Duquesne on Wednesday, April 1, at 12:30 p.m. Despite being hosted by the Dukes, the match will be held at the Club in Monroeville.
