WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The University of Pittsburgh baseball team dropped its second straight game in the Sunshine State today, 20-3, to Ohio State University at the Papa John’s Classic in West Palm Beach, Fla. The Panthers held a 2-0 through the first two innings, but could not hold on for the win.
Nate Reed (0-1) takes the loss for Pitt after throwing five and a third innings of work, yielding seven runs – five of which were earned – on nine hits. Reed struck out six Buckeye batters on the day.
Chris Sedon continues to churn out the hits, going 3-for-4 at the plate with and RBI and two runs scored. Sedon is batting .465 (20-for-43) through 10 games and carries a team-high .744 slugging percentage with three home runs and 11 RBI.
Chris Warner’s first homer of the season put the Panthers (5-5) on top 2-0. Sedon had singled to lead off the inning before stealing second and advancing to third on an error by Ohio State catcher Dan Burkhart.
Cory Kovanda’s RBI single in the bottom of the third cut the Panther lead to 2-1. Unfortunately for Pitt, Ohio State would score at least two runs over the next six innings, increasing its lead to 20-3 by the end of eight innings of play.
Pitt continues action tomorrow at the Papa John’s Classic with a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. against Long Island University. The Panthers second game, against North Dakota State University, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
