INDIANOLA, Pa. —The Pitt women's soccer team fought to the final whistle, but it fell short in its 1-0 loss to Charlotte on Sunday afternoon at Founders Field. Despite the defeat, the Panthers gave a strong showing in a physical contest against the two-time Atlantic-10 Conference champion 49ers.
In the 22nd minute, Charlotte forward Whitney Weinraub netted the day's lone goal. Weinraub collected a ball flicked by Whitney Bryant and shot into the right corner of the net. Nikki Dumencich also assisted on the play.
With fewer than 30 seconds remaining on the clock, the Panthers nearly scored off of a corner kick but couldn't get on the scoreboard.
"We battled really hard and had great effort," Pitt Head Coach Sue-Moy Chin said. "We just didn't put our chances away."
The Panthers fall to 2-3-0 while the 49ers improve to 3-1-1.
Pitt looks to rebound as it returns to Founders Field to host Kent State on Friday, Sept. 12. Kickoff is at 3 p.m.
