INDIANOLA, Pa.—The Pitt women’s soccer team scored an unanswered second half goal to down Kent State 1-0 on a rainy Friday afternoon at Founders Field. With the win, the Panthers notched their first shutout of the season. The victory also marked the third consecutive season that Pitt defeated Kent State.
Play between the Panthers and the Golden Flashes remained even throughout the opening half, with Pitt outshooting Kent State just 6-5. The tempo lagged during much of the first period, as neither team managed to get onto the scoreboard.
The Panthers registered the lone goal of the day off of a set piece shortly into the second half. In the 49th minute, Pitt midfielder Laura Berbert drove the ball into the back of the net. Berbert registered her first goal of the season with the 25-yard direct kick.
As the weather conditions deteriorated, the Panthers increased their offensive intensity and had several chances to score. Pitt forward Katelyn Ruhe broke free in the 82nd minute, but Kent State goalkeeper Kelly Sherwood snagged the ball. Ruhe finished the day with five shots and one shot on goal.
Pitt dominated play throughout the remainder of the game and outshot the Golden Flashes 7-2 in the second period.
“We started out slow in the first and kind of walked through it,” said Pitt Head Coach Sue-Moy Chin. “But we bounced back in the second half and were more aggressive. We had better possession and movement of the ball, and our backs were very organized.”
Pitt bettered its record to 3-3-0 while Kent State dropped to 2-3-0.
Pitt concludes its stretch of four home games as it returns to Founders Field to host St. Bonaventure this Sunday, Sept. 14. Kickoff is at 4:30 p.m.
