Women's Tennis Wins On Senior Day

PITTSBURGH-In the first win since their freshman season, the seniors of the Pitt women's tennis team garnered a 4-3 decision over Duquesne, this afternoon at Club 4 Life. Pitt improved to 11-7 on the season.
Prior to the match beginning, seniors Leah Friedman, Michele Petrasko and Carlie Smith were all honored for their commitment and dedication to the Panthers the last four seasons. The three seniors combined to lead Pitt to 44 team wins and 267 individual victories, including two Big East Championship berths. Additionally, this is the first class in program history that saw two members joined the 100-Victory Club.
On the day, Smith (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) was the only Panther to win both in singles and doubles. Her singles win lifted Pitt to a 3-2 lead in the match, while giving her her 134th career victory. She remains second on the all-time combined wins list and on the career-singles wins list at 76 victories.
Smith and Friedman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) teamed together in No. 3 doubles where they came back from a 2-5 deficit to win.
In singles action, Friedman won her first set 6-3, but became hampered by an injury and dropped the next two sets in a hard-fought match. Friedman is now tied for seventh with Erin Shalbrack (1995-99) at 113 career wins.
Junior Kristy Borza (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) earned her record-holding 139th career victory in the match, while classmate Christie D'achille (Gibsonia, Pa./North Allegheny) posted her 86th win in a competitive match.
The Panthers now await their seeding in the Big East Championships held in Tampa, Fla., from Thursday, April 17-20.
