PITTSBURGH--The University of Pittsburgh baseball team played host to Big East foe Georgetown this evening at Trees Field in the first of a three-game weekend series. The Panthers (13-23, 5-11) persevered after the Hoyas put some early runs on the board and went on to take the contest by a count of 9-2.
Georgetown (14-25, 4-15) struck first after leadoff hitter Tommy Lee singled, stole second and was brought home by a Matt Harrigan single in the top of the first. Pitt answered in the bottom of the second when Jordan Herr (Lancaster, Pa./Delaware) launched a Tim Adelman offering over the fence in left center, giving him three home runs this season and knotting the contest at one run a piece.
The Hoyas regained the lead in the third when they added another run, but that was all they could muster for the remainder of the night as Pitt hurler Nate Reed (Reading, Pa./Oley Valley) put the clamps down, limiting the opposition to just three hits while picking up his second complete game of the season. The win marked Reed's fifth of the year.
While Reed was keeping the Georgetown offense at bay, the Panther bats were just getting warmed up. Pitt broke free from the Hoyas in the bottom of the fourth with a six-run inning that included a solo shot from Chris Warner (West Seneca, N.Y./University of South Carolina) and doubles from Joe Leonard (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville), (Sean Conley (Chippewa, Pa./Blackhawk) and Morgan Kielty (Burlington, Ontario/Burlington Central). Kielty also finished with a team-high 10 putouts.
Pitt added two more in the bottom of the fifth, setting the final and clinching a momentous conference victory. The two teams will return to the diamond tomorrow for a double header that is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
