PITTSBURGH--Senior Jessica Dignon broke the school record for career and single-season doubles in the Pitt softball team's 5-3 loss to Syracuse, this afternoon, at Trees Field. The Panthers slipped to 27-19 overall and 10-7 in the Big East, while the Orange improved to 19-26 on the year and 10-7 in the league.
Dignon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) recorded her double in the third inning with a one-out shot to left field. That double marked her 14th of the season, which bested her 13 doubles last season. It was also her 42nd career double that eclipsed the 41 tallied by Francesca DiMaria (2002-05).
In the previous inning, Pitt took a 3-1 lead in the game. First, junior Samantha Card (Miami, Fla./Our Lady of Lourdes/Florida International) tied the game at 1-1 after she was overthrown at third and got down under the throw at the plate for the score. Senior Mary Hecker (Roseville, Calif./Roseville) then scored on a passed ball a few plays later.
Sophomore Megan Livesey (Livingston, N.J./The Montclair Kimberly Academy) then earned a RBI when she split the third baseman and short stop with a single to left field, allowing senior Kelly Murphy (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) to score. Murphy was pinch running for sophomore Kayla Zinger (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunnyslope), whose groundball resulted in Card's run.
Syracuse looked to take the lead in the first inning after a double placed runners on second and third. However, freshman Cory Berliner (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) caught the next batter looking for the first out of the game. Livesey then fielded two ground balls and checked the runners at third to get the Panthers out of a jam.
In the top of the second inning, a double sent a runner home for the first score of the game. Later in the fourth a two RBI homer tied the game at 3-3. The Orange went ahead 5-3 in the sixth with two runs off two hits and a Pitt error.
Berliner fell to 15-8 on the mound, as she allowed 11 hits and three earned runs in the game.
Game two of the Pitt-Syracuse doubleheader will be delayed due to stormy weather in the area.
