PITTSBURGH--Freshman Alyssa O'Connell threw a four-hit win, as the Pitt softball team recorded an 8-2 victory over Youngstown State in the second game of this afternoon's doubleheader, at Trees Field. Pitt improved to 29-20 on the year, while the Penguins slipped to 11-33 on the season.
O'Connell (Turnersville, N.J./Camden Catholic) threw her first complete game of the season, allowing just four hits and striking out another four in the win. O'Connell allowed both runs in the first inning, as she gave up a two-run homer to the Penguins in first inning. However, she held Youngstown to just two runs afterwards, including four shutout innings.
Trailing in the fourth inning, senior Kelly Murphy (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) tied the game with a two-RBI shot to right field, scoring junior Samantha Card (Miami, Fla./Our Lady of Lourdes/Florida International) and senior Mary Hecker (Roseville, Calif./Roseville).
The Panthers later took the lead in the fifth inning, as freshman Ashley Amistade (Washington, Pa./Trinity) was overthrown after beating out the throw to first, which allowed freshman Reba Tutt (Culpeper, Va./Highland) to score her 35th run of the season in the inning. Amistade would score on a wild pitch a few pitches later.
Senior Jessica Dignon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) then scored Pitt's fifth run of the game with a single to right field from sophomore Megan Livesey (Livingston, N.J./The Montclair Kimberly Academy).
Later in the sixth, Tutt smacked her seventh double of the season when she found a hole in center field, and drove in senior Rebecca Stottlemyer (Charleroi, Pa./Home schooled) to score her 11th run of the year.
Card would give the Panthers the eventual win at 8-2 lead with a two-RBI single that bounced to left field, scoring Amistade and Tutt.
Pitt travels to St. Francis for a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday, April 30.
