TAMPA, Fla.-Freshman Elizabeth Adams won her 25th singles match of the season, while Pitt's women's tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to Rutgers in the first round of the Big East Championships, this morning, at the USF Tennis Complex.
Adams (Reading, Pa./Wilson) earned Pitt's (11-8) lone point with a 6-3, 6-0 win in No. 3 singles. Her victory improved her singles record to 25-9 and solidified her 44th overall combined win. Adams' 25th singles victory also moved her into third place on the single-season wins list.
The day began as Rutgers jumped out early with wins in No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, for the first point of the match. The No. 1 duo of Adams and junior Kristy Borza (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) were in the midst of a close and intense match when they were stopped at 5-6.
Likewise, in singles senior Leah Friedman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) and Borza's matches were stopped after the deciding point was awarded to the Scarlet Knights.
Friedman had just garnered the split against her opponent after winning the second set (6-2), and was heading into the third set with momentum when the referee intervened.
The Panthers face 12th-seeded Georgetown at 3 p.m., in Friday's consolation bracket.
Borza is looking to tie her 2006-07 single-season record for singles wins in a season (27), as she currently has 26 on the year.
