PROVIDENCE, R.I.--With its highest-ever ranking, the Pitt women's tennis team earned its second berth in three seasons to the Big East Championships, held in Tampa, Fla., at the University of South Florida Tennis Complex from Thursday, April 17-20.
The Panthers (11-7, 5-2 Big East) garnered their highest-ever draw and enter the tournament as the No. 9 seed, facing the No. 8 seeded Rutgers (13-8, 7-4 Big East) in the first round on Thursday at 9 a.m. The winner of the first round match meets top-seeded Notre Dame at 9 a.m., on Friday.
Senior Carlie Smith (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) and junior Kristy Borza (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) look to extend their career singles and all-time combined wins records.
Borza shattered the program's all-time wins record earlier this season and currently boasts 140 career combined victories, while edging closer to the single-season singles and doubles records.
Pitt dropped a 5-2 decision to the Scarlet Knights earlier this season, while playing three matches in three days against conference opponents. The Panthers shutout Villanova and Seton Hall, prior to facing Rutgers at the end of March.
