PITTSBURGH--Making Pitt history yet again, junior Kristy Borza of the women's tennis team became the first-ever Panther to garner an ITA ranking, placing 26th on the ITA Region 1 singles list released earlier this winter. She is the only Big East player to earn a ranking in the East Region.
"This is a first in the 33-year history of Panther tennis that a player has been ranked in ITA singles," Head Coach George Dieffenbach said. "I want to congratulate Kristy for all of her accomplishments."
This is the second time Borza (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) has earned an ITA ranking, as she and senior Leah Friedman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) obtained a first-ever ITA East region No. 13 doubles ranking last season. The duo was the only members of a Big East school to receive mention in that top-14 poll.
Earlier this season, Borza won the Women's Eastern Collegiate Invitational and advanced to the round of 32 in the ITA Championships. She then made Pitt history when she reached 100 victories faster than any player in Pitt history. With 107 career victories, Borza looks to surpass the school record of 126 wins in just her third season.
Borza, who has earned back-to-back team MVP honors, has played every match in the No. 1 singles slot, setting a school record for wins in a season (27) in 2007. She tied the previous mark of 26 as a freshman in 2006.
The Panthers begin spring play on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 11 a.m. against Big East opponent Georgetown at Club 4 Life in Monroeville, Pa.
