Softball Blanks Seton Hall In 16 Run Game

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.--12 runs and two home runs in the second inning and a one-hitter combine to lift the Panthers to a 16-0 victory over Seton Hall in game one of this afternoon's doubleheader at Ivy Hill Park.

It all started, offensively, when freshman Alex Shoemaker (
Next, following two outs and with two runners on senior Sheena Hellon (Sacramento, Calif./Cordova) doubled to right field earning two RBI when junior Valerie Mihalik (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) and senior Morgan Howard (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) scored. Hellon would then steal her 23rd base of the season, while senior Joey Scarf (Humble, Texas/Humble) would steal second base after being hit by a pitch, forcing a pitching change.
Junior Jessica Dignon (
Two Panthers earned bases on balls, leading to the Pirates switching their pitcher for the second time in the game. Pitt patiently accepted two more walks for another run. Then with bases loaded freshman April Ghiroli (
Leading 10-0, Hellon recorded two more RBIs in the inning with a single to left field.
Later in the third inning, Dignon put the Panthers on the scoreboard with a run when Shoemaker tallied a sacrifice fly ball.
Finally in the fourth, Pitt scored another three runs off three hits and one Seton Hall error. Hellon drove in two of those runs when she tallied her second double of the game that scored senior Heather Connor (
Hellon was a perfect 3-for-3, scoring two runs and driving in six.
