QUEENS, N.Y.--Junior Valerie Mihalik recorded four RBIs to lead the Panthers to a 5-1 victory over St. John's in game one of their doubleheader this afternoon at Red Storm Field. Pitt improved to 18-30 on the season and 4-10 in the conference.
Mihalik (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) was 2-3 in the contest, as she drove in the opening two runs of the game, when she hit a one-out double to center field in the second inning.
The Red Strom answered Pitt's 2-0 lead with one run off a hit in the third inning.
However, Pitt added another run in the fifth off a single to left field from junior Jessica Dignon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin). Junior Rebecca Stottlemyer (Charleroi, Pa./Home schooled) scored her sixth run of the season on the play.
Mihalik then recorded another two RBIs in the sixth inning when she singled to right field with bases loaded. Junior Mary Hecker (Roseville, Calif./Roseville) and freshman Alex Shoemaker (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) scored the two runs, give Pitt its 5-1 lead.
Senior Meghan Bostick (Colleyville, Texas/Grapevine) earned the win for the Panthers on the mound. Bostick (6-7) pitched 4.0 innings, giving up just one walk and striking out four batters. In three innings of relief, senior Laura Belardinelli (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) struck out another four batters.
