Women's Tennis Heads To West Coast

PITTSBURGH--Pitt women's tennis team faces Cal Riverside for the first time in program history on Thursday, March 8, at 5 p.m. The Panthers look to extend their unbeaten record to five games for the first time since the 1991-1992 season.

Pitt (4-0) is coming off its best start since 1997, when the Panthers opened the year with a 4-0 record and finished 17-10. The Panthers are seeking a 5-0 mark for the first time since the 1991-92 team opened the season with seven consecutive wins.

Junior Carlie Smith (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) enters this contest just 10 wins shy of joining the 100-Victory Club. Smith is 15-7 in singles action and 8-6 in double this year.

The doubles duo of sophomore Kristy Borza (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) and junior Leah Friedman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Alderdice) have been impressive, boasting a 12-3 record on the season.

The Highlanders (5-4) are lead by the No. 1 doubles team of Erynne Oki and Donna McCullough, who together are 8-2 this season. Three of Cal Riverside's losses came against nationally ranked opponents--UNLV, San Diego State and Long Beach State.
