WEST POINT, N.Y.--Pitt's women's tennis team earns one doubles title in a consolation bracket, while others play through the semifinals round of the 2006 Eastern Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Championships.
Sophomore Christie D'achille (Gibsonia, Pa./North Allegheny) and freshman Anna Broverman (Asbury, W.Va.) won the consolation bracket of flight A doubles. The duo first defeated Nicole Henderson and Aja Wright of Howard in an 8-3 match, before earning another 8-3 win, this time against Quinnipiac's Denielle Rodriguez and Kasey Rosenberger.
In flight B doubles, junior Michele Petrasko (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights) and Anne Piccirillo (Spring City, Pa.) dropped an 8-5 match to Quinnipiac's Nikki Adams and Shawna Sarson.
Sophomore Kristy Borza (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) gave up just three points in her flight A singles win over Providence's Niki Flach (6-1, 6-2) in the first match of the day. Later Borza, with the No. 3 seed, dropped a 6-3, 6-4 match to No. 1 seeded Ames Daisy of Brown.
Facing the third-seeded Mary Wilson of Quinnipiac, junior Leah Friedman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) fell 6-2, 6-4 in flight B singles. In flight C action, senior Annie Davies (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) fell to her third-seeded opponent, Kelley LoRusso of UConn, in a close-scoring 6-4, 6-4 match, while junior Carlie Smith (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) dropped a 6-3, 6-3 match to No. 3 Stephanie LeFartune in flight D singles.
The Eastern Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Championships concludes with the final rounds today.
