PITTSBURGH-One day after sweeping the singles titles, the University of Pittsburgh women's tennis team cleaned up in doubles action, as well. Pitt entered four doubles teams in the Carnegie Mellon Invitation, this past weekend, and three teams won their bracket.
Earning the win in No. 1 Doubles was sophomore Kristy Borza (Beaver Area, Pa./Beaver) and junior Leah Friedman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice). Borza and Friedman fell behind in their first matchup against a very good Duquesne duo, but came together in the end with an 8-4 victory. Next the Panthers headed to the championship game against CMU's Amy Staloch and Mona Iyer, pulling away with an 8-5 win.
Sophomore Christie D'achille (Gibsonia, Pa./North Allegheny) and freshman Anna Broverman (Charleston, W.Va.) teamed up to win the No. 3 Doubles crown. D'Achille and Broverman recorded the bye in the first round and went on to defeat Kelly Nakamura and Claire Weiss, 8-4.
Rounding out the doubles champions were junior Michele Petrasko (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington) and freshman Anne Piccirillo (Spring City, Pa.). The team's sole match was an 8-2 victory against CMU's Otsuka and Stankevich.
The duo of senior Annie Davies (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) and junior Carlie Smith (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) advanced to the title match in the second flight of doubles. Davies and Smith first defeated a team from CMU, 8-4, but dropped the championship match to Johanna Bezjak and Rachel McGowan of Duquesne, 8-0.
Pitt travels to West Point, N.Y. for the three-day Women's Eastern Collegiate Championships on Friday, Sept. 15.
