PITTSBURGH--Junior Meghan Bostick earned her fifth shutout of the season, as the University of Pittsburgh softball team defeated Robert Morris, 6-0, in game one of this afternoon's doubleheader.
Bostick (Colleyville, Texas/Grapevine) worked a six-hit shutout through the sixth inning and tied Nikki Gasti (2002) for the second-best mark on the single-season list for shutouts.
The Panthers got on the board in the second inning after sophomore Valerie Mihalik (Schneckville, Pa./Parkland) was surprisingly walked with bases loaded, scoring sophomore Mary Hecker (Roseville, Calif./Roseville).
Just before Mihalik was walked, junior Heather Connor (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) was also walked in her first trip to the plate. Connor's walk marked the 27th time this season she has advanced to base on balls, which sits atop the single-season list for walks.
Pitt added two more runs in the third. Sophomore Jessica Dignon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) tallied a RBI when she traded places with junior Joey Scarf (Humble, Texas/Humble). Both Dignon and Scarf sent back-to-back doubles to center field. Dignon, then, scored when she slid behind Robert Morris' catcher, trying to make the play at home.
Dignon scored again in the fifth after she stole third and tagged on Hecker's caught fly ball to right field. Later, Scarf drove in the final runs of the game with a double to center field in the bottom of the sixth.
