Softball Falls In Big East Semifinals

NOTRE DAME, Ind.--In the semifinals of the Big East Championships, the Panthers were out-hit, 7-1, and fell 5-0 to Notre Dame at Ivy Field, this afternoon. Despite advancing to their first-ever conference tournament, Pitt's season ends with a record-setting 32-27 record.

Sophomore Jessica Dignon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) earned Pitt's solo hit of the game in the seventh inning, with two outs on the board.

Junior Laura Belardinelli (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) took the loss for the Panthers and finished the season with a 15-11 record, after tallying all three assists in the bottom half of the second inning.

Notre Dame recorded its first run in the third inning off a one-out single to right field. After the pass from right hit the runner sliding back to the plate, the runner at third took off for home to score the run. The Irish then hit a double to center field to send in the second runner. Junior Meghan Bostick (Colleyville, Texas/Grapevine) replaced Belardinelli on the rubber and garnered a strikeout and a groundout. Notre Dame, later, scored three more runs in the sixth, after loading the bases.

Senior Christa Hunter (Sacramento, Calif./Harim Johnson West) brought the game to an end by retiring all three batters in order after a lead-off walk in the seventh.

The Panthers had a scare early in the game, as Notre Dame loaded the bases with only one batter retired. Dignon fielded a ground ball and threw home immediately for the second out, while junior Sheena Hellon (Sacramento, Calif./Cordova) tallied the assist on the third out.
