Softball Blasts Four Homers In Doubleheader

CHARLOTTE, N.C.--Despite four home runs, the first of the season for the squad, Pitt's softball team fell one-run short in each game of its doubleheader against UNC Charlotte, this afternoon. The Panthers dropped a 5-4 decision in the first game before falling 6-5 in the second game. Pitt slipped to 3-8 on the season.

Junior Heather Connor's (Reading, PA/Muhlenberg) lead-off homer in the second inning of game one put the Panthers on the scoreboard first. Charlotte's answer came in the bottom of the fourth as the runner on third scored off a wild pitch, tying the game at one.

Then in the top of the sixth, senior Lisa McGregor (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) blasted a one-out long ball and earned three RBIs after sophomore Leanne McCarron (Norwood, PA/Interboro) and junior Sheena Hellon (Sacramento, CA/Cordova) scored on the play. McCarron was pinch running for Connor, who hit a lead-off single up the middle.

After the three-run inning gave Pitt a 4-1 lead, the 49ers responded with a four-run inning of their own to take the lead and eventual win.

A triple to right center field gave Charlotte two runs before the next batter singled, tying the game at four runs a piece. Senior Christa Hunter (Sacramento, CA/Hiram Johnson West) replaced junior Meghan Bostick (Colleyville, TX/Grapevine) on the mound and allowed a single to right that garnered the final RBI for Charlotte. Hunter fanned the next two batters and got the third to pop up to end the inning.

Pitt saw a chance to score after two runners advanced to base due to errors but a runner caught stealing at third ended the game.

In the second game of the day, Charlotte scored three runs early in the first. Pitt, then, scored all five of its runs in the third inning off four hits and one Charlotte error. The highlight of the game was not that Connor tallied her second homer of the day, but that this time it was with bases loaded. Jessica Dignon (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin), Morgan Howard (Wexford, PA/North Allegheny) and Francesca DiMaria (Pittsburgh, PA/Montour) all scored on the play. McGregor followed Connor's lead and tallied her second bomb of the day, as well to give the Panthers a 5-3 advantage.

As the 49ers did in the first game, they responded to Pitt's scoring with runs of their own in the bottom of the third.

Hunter entered the game with one run scored and loaded the bases after walking her first batter. One single and an error later, Charlotte had enough runs to hold onto a 6-5 victory.

Pitt will stay in N.C. as it travels to Western Carolina on Tuesday, March 7 for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
